Special Motor Equipment Operator/Skilled Craftsman

The Town of Dartmouth is seeking to fill a Special Motor Equipment Operator/Skilled Craftsman position with the Department of Public Works for the water & sewer division. This position performs skilled manual work of a difficult and responsible nature involving the operation of heavy, complex public works equipment; carries out skilled manual tasks related to water and sewer system construction and maintenance programs; and performs all other related duties as required.

Operates all special motor equipment for the construction and maintenance of water and sewer projects; may also operate Tractor-Trailer combination for moving heavy equipment; operates a variety of hand and power tools, including jackhammers, pipe detection equipment, rod machine; operates light and heavy trucks and other vehicles.

Essential Functions:

Operates specialized and heavy equipment including, but not limited to, sewer flush truck, backhoe, front end loader, roller, large dump trucks and other heavy equipment in construction and maintenance projects; operates hand tools including pick and shovel; operates power tools including drills, pipe cutter, pipe locator, leak locator, and tapping machine, etc.

Works with field crews and participates in the construction of extension to the water distribution system and sewer system; installs water mains and lines, sewer lines, hydrants, valves, and pumps; excavates trenches and backfills excavations; repairs water mains, sewer and drain lines, hydrants, and gates; flushes sewer mains; rods drain mains; locates pipe leaks; repairs road surfaces with hot asphalt.

Works in trenches to connect and repair the services; installs compression joints.

May perform laboring duties when not assigned to equipment operation; may be assigned to other divisions on an "as needed" basis or in an emergency.

Responds to emergency situations; determines appropriate corrective action; leads crews in repair procedures; makes repairs of main leaks; responds to questions and complaints and makes related repairs; performs general customer service activities including service turn-on and shut-off.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency; three years experience in the operation of special and heavy motor equipment plus up to six months experience in municipal water and sewer system operations; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required.

Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement

Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer's Class C License

Water Certification at the minimum grade, desired

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.06 - $32.27 per hour
