The City of Wasilla Public Works Department is hiring for the winter season! The Parks & Properties Laborer performs daily hands-on maintenance of parks, properties, and public facilities, including seasonal horticultural and grounds tasks, snow removal, and facility upkeep to ensure safe year-round access in accordance with approved Parks and Recreation Division procedures, safety regulations, and grooming standards. The main focus during the winter season will be snow removal. 


Monday-Friday schedule, 40 hours per week, for up to 6 months. 

This is a non-regular, non-benefitted position.

The following duties are essential for this position.  However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may also be required or assigned.

  • Perform minor facility construction, improvement, repair and maintenance.
  • Plant and maintain flowerbeds, hanging baskets, shrubs, trees, lawn and fields; operate manual digging tools, hand tools or power tools.
  • Perform summer grounds maintenance, including mowing, weed trimming, irrigation, fertilization, leaf removal and turf care.
  • Perform winter snow and ice control, including shoveling, snow blowing, sanding, salting, and plowing to ensure safe access to public buildings, parks and properties.
  • Perform sanitation maintenance, including litter collection, restroom cleaning and area clean-up.
  • Maintain facilities, signs, fences, park equipment, and other structures; report acts of vandalism and make repairs.
  • Operate city-owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of annuals and perennials is helpful.
  • Knowledge of planting, watering, deadheading, and seasonal care of flowers, shrubs, trees and turf is helpful.

Skill in:

  • Must be highly motivated, work well as a team member, follow instructions, and complete tasks independently under time pressure as needed.
Ability to:
  • Operate or learn to operate small maintenance equipment (e.g. small tractors, riding lawn mowers, weed trimmers, snow blowers and plows).
  • Learn to perform preventative maintenance of small equipment.
  • Effectively use hand tools (e.g. shovels, picks, rakes) or the ability to learn to do so.
  • Communicate clearly by voice on radio, cell phone as well as in person.


Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency 
  • Previous facility and grounds maintenance experience preferred.
