Under the supervision of the Municipal Court Supervisor, the Probation/Diversion Officer follows policies and procedures established by the Court Supervisor regarding internal court operations, by the Municipal Judge regarding the specific supervision of Probationers, and by the City Prosecutor regarding the specific supervision of Diversionees. This position is responsible for monitoring and supervising persons placed on probation by the Municipal Judge, as well as persons placed on diversion by the City Prosecutor. This employee exercises significant discretion in working with Probationers and Diversionees regarding the details of complying with the terms of probation and diversion, and should possess excellent communication, organizational and public relations skills.

A DAY IN THE LIFE:

  • Prepares probation documents as ordered by the Judge; prepares diversion agreements as directed by the City Prosecutor;
  • Reviews rules and regulations of probation/diversion with clients; schedules jail time for clients as ordered; prepares community service agreements; develops payment schedules; assists with the scheduling of classes and counseling for clients;
  • Monitors monthly reporting from clients; collects monthly payments from clients; monitors client completion of classes and counseling working closely with a variety of providers on treatment plans; monitors arrest logs for criminal activity of clients;
  • Processes probation violations/diversion revocations; prepares affidavits and motions for the court; sends notices of court hearings to clients; processes successfully completed probation/diversion journal entries;
  • Testifies in court as needed; assists with plea negotiations for these cases; prepares travel permits for clients leaving the State of Kansas;
  • Sends necessary conviction/diversion information to the Department of Motor Vehicles and Kansas Bureau of Investigation;
  • Utilizes court software for information recording and gathering purposes;
  • Cross-trains with team members to assist with other Municipal Court functions as staffing needs may require;
  • Performs receptionist duties; responds to inquiries from the public; processes paperwork and performs a variety of diverse functions necessary to conduct court related activities;
  • Performs all other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR SUCCESS:

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required, and a technical degree or some college credit in Business or a related field is preferred.

Experience: 1-3 years of similar or related experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within 1 year of employment.

Certifications/Licenses: Must possess valid Kansas driver's license and must be able to become "limited access" NCIC (National Crime Information Center) certified within 6 months of appointment.
