General Utility Worker L1-2 Brooklyn & Queens - Field Substation Ops

## Key Role Overview The General Utility Worker assists Electric Operations teams on the electric distribution system by connecting underground electrical cables and installing, removing, testing, inspecting, and replacing electrical services. This hands-on field role supports fault location, feeder identification, and isolation/protection activities, requires physical ability for heavy manual work and emergency response, and involves customer-facing responsibilities in the Field Substation Operations section serving Brooklyn and Queens. ## Key Responsibilities - Assist in connecting various underground electrical cables and installing, removing, testing, inspecting, and replacing electrical services on the electric distribution system. - Support employees in higher titles performing activities such as fault location, identifying feeders, and isolating/providing protection for personnel working on electrical apparatus. - Provide outstanding customer service and present a positive image of the company to customers. - Complete required written, practical, and physical abilities tests, and participate in associated interviews and training requirements. - Work rotating shifts (including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays) and respond to company emergencies by performing System Emergency Assignments to restore service. - Travel within the service territory and to company locations as needed for storm restoration and heat contingencies. - Operate hand tools and heavy machinery as required (e.g., jackhammers), and use/handle equipment within specified manufacturer weight ratings. ## Required Qualifications - High School Diploma or GED. - Valid Driver's License. - Ability to pass a Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and respirator fit testing; must be able to wear and use a full or half-face respirator without facial hair or other conditions that interfere with the seal. - Ability to pass Department of Transportation physical exam and drug testing requirements (applicants will be tested for marijuana due to Commercial Motor Vehicle operation requirements). - Demonstrated ability to perform heavy manual labor, including pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders and stairs, entering and climbing in/out of manholes and excavations, and working at heights and in confined spaces. - Effective oral and written communication skills. - Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts and travel within the service territory. - Ability to satisfactorily complete required training and to use hand-eye coordination to adjust equipment controls. - If extended an offer, obtain American Red Cross certifications for Adult First - Aid CPR AED and Blood Borne Pathogens (external candidates responsible for certification costs). ## Preferred Qualifications - Prior demonstrated construction experience in general construction, plumbing, and/or electrical work. ## Compensation & Benefits - Salary range: Not specified in the posting. - Rich medical and pharmacy benefits, including vision benefits. - Dental benefits. - Health Savings Accounts (HSA). - Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). - 401(k) with robust matching. - Employer-paid Pension Plan. - Employee Stock Purchase Plan with a generous matching contribution. - Employee Assistance Program. - Paid Parental Leave. - Generous paid time off plus paid holidays. - Family support: emergency backup child and elder care assistance. - Social responsibility and volunteer opportunities. - Employee discount program. - Commuter Benefits. - Career development, tuition reimbursement, and recognition programs. - Life and Long - Term Disability benefits. - Note: Some benefits may not apply to provisional or part-time job titles. ## Additional Information - Work is based in the Field Substation Operations Section serving Brooklyn and Queens; full-time position. - Must be able to work in all weather conditions and adverse environments (excessive heat/cold, noise, confined spaces, high elevations) and use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses. - Required to perform extended driving through heavy traffic and off-road conditions and to work with and near high-voltage/high-energy systems. - Equipment handling specifications: work with equipment having manufacturer weight ratings of 350 lbs and up to 375 lbs when carrying 25 lbs of clothing and equipment. - Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds, carry tools and materials, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, stand, and walk for the duration of the workday. - Selected candidates must successfully complete written, practical, and physical tests, respirator fit testing, and required certifications if extended an offer. - Con Edison, O&R, and CET are equal opportunity employers and require adherence to company policies regarding health, safety, environmental standards, and Standards of Business Conduct. - For technical issues with the application process, contact careerconnect@coned.com.
